Litter Box Training: A purr-fect guide on how to train your cat

Bringing a new cat or kitten into your home is extremely fun, but it also comes with the responsibility of teaching them good bathroom habits. Litter box training is a crucial step in living together with your new furry friend.

Hoe train je je kat om zijn kattenbak te gebruiken

Natural litter box users

Before delving into the training process, it's important to understand some natural principles of cat behaviour. Cats are naturally inclined to bury their waste, making them litter box users by instinct. However, it still isn't always easy to make them use the litter box designed for them, especially with young kittens or cats that have had negative experiences before.

Training Guide

The first step in learning your cat the trick is selecting the right box. Consider factors like size, depth, and the material of the box. The location of the box should be somewhere quiet.

The process

1. Placement:
Position the litter box in a quiet, low-traffic area. Avoid placing it near their food and water bowls.
2. Introduction:
When you bring your new cat or kitten home, show them the litter box and allow them to explore it. If you place a litter box after you got a cat, place your furry friend near it and let it explore the box himself.
3. Scent Transfer:
If you're buying a new litter box, transfer some used litter from the old one over to the new one to  familiarize your cat with the scents.

4. Placing your cat into the box:
Keep a close eye on your cat and watch for signs that they need to go to the toilet (sniffing, circling, or digging). If you notice these signs, place them in the litter box.

5. Rewarding your cat:
When your cat uses the litter box, praise them for it and treat them with snacks or their normal food.

6. Consistency:
Stick to a regular feeding and bathroom schedule to help your cat establish a routine.

7. Cleaning the box:
Keep the litter box clean by scooping waste daily and changing the litter regularly. This makes it more attractive for your cat to stick to his/her routine.
